A Dramatic View of Cell Division from a ‘Mitochondrion’s’ Point of View

The unique quality of Audra‘s biomedical landscapes has its origin in Audra’s foundational philosophy.

She believes strongly that the power of art to transport us back to a child-like state of wonder and curiosity, is invaluable in engaging us and facilitating learning. With that goal always in mind, Audra strives to inspire interest and understanding by envisioning science and medicine in fresh ways, taking perspectives not previously seen, while ensuring the accuracy of the science she is depicting.

This 3-dimensional image, entitled Mitosis: Late Stage Anaphase, is a perfect example of Audra’s signature approach to biomedical illustration. The art was created as an editorial piece in which Audra envisioned what it would be like to see the events of mitosis happening dramatically from inside a dividing cell. She took what she thought of whimsically as a ‘mitochondrions’s eye view’ looking towards one of the mitotic poles. The result is a stunning image with great dimensionality and originality.

Of course, not all of Audra’s images are epic bioscapes. Most of her work requires a more traditional approach, but even in those projects Audra always finds a way to show things differently from what others have done before while elucidating complex medicine as clearly and beautifully as possible.
